Crazy Lazy Turtle goes CrossFit ?

Ah! Ah!

Got You !

Let me tell you first that accessible Cross Fit Gyms/Boxes are few and far from me ( the closest I could find is about 30klms away , near my daughter’s University Campus and quite expensive for my limited budget ) .

Still , as you say … Where There’s a Will There’s a Way ! And now I’m doing my CrossFit the Turtle Way what else ?

brace yourselves , craziness coming

This house has been feeling a bit neglected lately – I’ve never been much of a housekeeper or housewife or whatever you want to call it , but for these last three months even the barest minimum I get by with , seemed too much for my energy levels  – and that’s something I had to attend to sooner than later .

But as much as I don’t like cleaning and dusting (horrors! my hands and eyes swell at the mere suggestion of touching dust ! ) I like even less living in a dusty untidy house .

So for the past few days I’ve been attacking dust and dirt and clutter like it’s my life mission and turning it into a CrossFit sort of workout .

From http://www.crossfit.com : “CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity. All CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements, and these movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more. These are the core movements of life.

Yes , with a bit of imagination you may start to believe you’re actually doing a great workout (minus the coach yelling into your face) . If I don’t give up mid job or fall down from the stepladder I’ll end up with a squeaky clean house and a somewhat more toned and limber body .

Let’s begin with my special private space The Basement .

The Basement is tile all over , from the floor to all the walls up to the windows and the ceiling , and the stairs are marble .

I’ve found out the best and the funniest way – because playing with water is always a big plus with this Turtle –  to get everything really clean is to give it a really good old fashioned wash . As there are no faucets down there ,  this involves carrying a few buckets of water down and then bringing them up all dirty and heavier (yes … ants and spiders and dust weigh a lot , didn’t you know ?) . Quite an workout and no need for those fancy Kettlebells .

So , we’re working our arms and shoulders and back and the stabilizing abdominal muscles carrying those water buckets , plus doing arm circles while washing the walls . Then if you’re a little on the short side like myself you need to keep climbing on a stepladder to reach those corners in the ceiling where the dearest spiders like to hang out (they must consider my always open windows an invitation to come and visit me and hang around) . You can really work your balance on that stepladder ( and I need to keep my balance in tip top shape if I ever want to get myself up on a surfboard ) , and your calves will benefit too .

But all this won’t be enough for a true CrossFit Workout . You need to add speed to raise your heart rate and work on your resistance and stamina . So , run up those stairs , and move to some fast paced music when you’re washing those walls . There is also an opportunity for explosive movements when you have to jump out of the way of a scurrying frightened spider (I’m still to find out who is more scared of each other , me or them 😉  )

And for good measure don’t forget to lift some boxes (you know the ones … the Christmas decorations boxes , the “one day we may need this” boxes , the “kids mementos boxes” that we hope one day they’ll move to their own houses – yes , keep dreaming ) and move them from one side of the room to the other , as they might just look better in a different light 😉 .

Must not forget also the opportunities the furniture offers you :  push push push , and maybe tilt it just a bit to help moving it .

Then if you’re a bit like me you find that moving everything around gives you a bigger or better space , and that it is so fun to play decorator . This also gives you an excellent way out of getting on with the cleaning on the rest of the house , because first you must finish your decorating right ?  😉

And this Dear Turtlies is what I’ve been doing these past few days .

After all the work I had ( reading all those books 😉 )  trying not to let my brain go totally mush , I needed to do something similar for my body .

Turtle Hugs  but Gentle ones (with my new developed biceps and triceps and shoulder cuffs and whatnot I’m afraid to hug you tight 😉  ) Turtle Hugs 😀

  1. Hello again! Just wanted to say that since your blog glows of awesomeness, I’ve nominated you for the Sunshine blogger award! You can read all about it in my latest blog post:

Participation (writing a similar blog post) is voluntary and there is no pressure to do so. It is just a lot of fun when people decide to participate and spread the sunshine. 🙂 Anyway, congratulations, well deserved! Your friend/SurvivedNarc

  2. Good for you! But please be careful, especially on those marble basement stairs – don’t want you slipping on water with your speedy efforts. I’m totally behind this though – I moved a lot of heavy furniture today and kept telling myself it was a good workout. So much so, I allowed myself a cookie when I’d finished! 😉

  3. Oh Turtle, thank you! I needed that inspiration to get going on my side. Stats have proven that on ‘Day Two of exercise’ is generally when it hurts ! Oouch…not looking forward to that. x

    1. Day two …and three …and four 😉
Try to not go all out on the first days , change between heavy and light jobs throughout and reward yourself with a good not too bath everyday (you may put some Epson Salts in it) , and always look back and take notice of what is already done 😉 Go Girl 🙂

  4. Sounds like a great way to get a workout. I, too, need to get with cleaning my house. I love a clean, tidy house, but hate to be the one to clean! LOL I also have some outside work to do that could help with the cross training. Great ideas.
